My latest YouTube gripe

Postby Blaziken257 » June 15th, 2008, 6:16 am

It seems that I almost always have something to gripe about YouTube, and here's my latest one. Basically, ever since YouTube has introduced this High Quality option on some of the videos, many of the videos I upload have had horrible sound (and there were a couple that I already uploaded that originally had decent sound but now have horrible sound, which I'll get to later). The problem? The volume is very erratic. At random points in my videos, the sound just gets louder for no reason at all. Then it gets softer again. Today, I spent many hours trying to get my Jungle Jinx video to have good sound, but to no avail. I've tried everything -- different codecs, different bitrates, different file formats (including wmv, avi, and flv), and NOTHING works.

Now you're probably thinking: "It's just your computer, right?" Wrong. First of all, I never noticed this AT ALL until they had this High Quality/Low Quality option. Second of all, when I view the videos on my hard drive, they're completely fine. There is no problem with the sound at all. Additionally, when I upload the same exact videos on other sites, such as LiveVideo (yes, I still go there) and Veoh, the sound is still fine. So it's definitely a problem with YouTube. Also, I haven't done anything different in the past few months, either. I've been recording, making, and uploading videos the same way as I've always have (at least when I started to use emulators, anyway). Though, I don't see other people with this problem that much, except for one of talaivaneizer's (Kiddy14's videos), which I'll cover later.

Here's the Jungle Jinx video I uploaded today:

Here's the SAME EXACT video I uploaded on LiveVideo:

http://www.livevideo.com/video/5FAF5FAA ... ungle.aspx

Notice the difference? The sound is much better on LiveVideo. It doesn't give me headaches.

And like I said, it's happened to me with a few other videos as well:

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94X-1wq3zWw (This isn't too bad compared to the others in this topic, but still noticeable, especially in viewing it in high quality)
  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhxO5K3JB04 (VERY noticeable in high quality, but not in low quality... no, this isn't a typo, it's worse in high quality than low quality)
  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZX_Qs0Tfftc (Again, VERY noticeable in high quality in certain parts, but almost non-existant in low quality. It's also worth mentioning that this video was completely fine when I first uploaded it, but when they introduced the High Quality feature, it's very annoying to listen to now.)
  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDZFcxp6ib8 (See above, this is just part 2 of the video above due to YouTube's 10:59 limit)

And I uploaded ALL of these videos on LiveVideo as well:

  • http://www.livevideo.com/video/2E28E3959E0142F6809E2B15F77FA07E/donkey-kong-land-3-vertigo-v.aspx
  • http://www.livevideo.com/video/32797E61E1CA4D19A4302D3895E4ED6F/keitai-denjuu-telefang-2-her.aspx (this one is one video instead of two due to the lack of a time limit)

Again, if you watch these videos on YouTube than watch them on LiveVideo, there's a really noticeable difference. YouTube has been getting on my nerves lately (actually, it has been getting on my nerves in the past year, but that's for a different reason that I'd rather not rant about) and it would be nice if they fixed this. But, knowing them, it will probably take many, many months to fix this sound issue, if they ever do, since they always take forever to fix anything. I even e-mailed them about this problem and I got a completely useless reply about a week later. They blamed it on my codec, even though I haven't done anything different.

Also, I uploaded the first video (the Vertigo Verge) one on Veoh as well, if anybody cares:

http://www.veoh.com/videos/v9669954ZhH9Nm6z

One last thing: talaivaneizer/Kiddy14 also has sound problems in at least one of his videos:

So does anybody know how to fix this problem? I've tried everything and nothing works. I guess I'll have to wait for YouTube to take forever to fix this sound issue...

I uploaded a DivX video yesterday.

Even though the frame-rate is fine, and the audio is fine, the video has horrible quality. If you add the &fmt=18 before the video URL, the frame-rate becomes choppy, and the audio becomes less loud, but the video quality improves ¬¬

WMVs videos have been really choppied in YT. They usually end up with too much blurring... Many of my videos already have a High Quality button, but some doesn't... You see, I hate the quality of this one, and it has the same issue of the audio ¬¬

I may have gotten a solution.

I have recently used EM Total Video Converter V3.12 to convert the wmv videos to avi with the H264 codec. The videos in YT look awesome, and they usually get a watch in high quality option really fast. And don't suffer with audio problems and that :)

It didn't help much. The video quality is decent, but the sound is still screwed up, and it leaves a stupid watermark on the top left (though it isn't as bad as Hypercam, but still annoying).

I told you, I found a code in the net. I don't like to use those things but my dad usually does that, so yeh...

I'm not posting it but if you want it I can give it to you in a PM, just tell me...

No thanks, I'd rather not pirate programs. And as I said, it didn't even help fix the sound.

Yeah... I supposed, I used it because I was angry with YT... and I can't buy it since I don't have a credit card, am not 18 years old, and am not US Resident -_-
