TSR Ripping Project

Postby Tonberry2000 » February 28th, 2012, 8:18 am

I know this isn't a fangame project, per se, but I think it's something you'd all be interested in anyway. Over at TSR, if you've seen my posts, you know that we're doing a ripping project of the DKC games. We're almost to the end, with a lot done and only the playable characters plus some odds and ends left. Here are the sections with the sprites. Feel free to use them for your own projects!

DKC- http://spriters-resource.com/snes/dkc/index.html
DKC2- http://spriters-resource.com/snes/dkc2/index.html
DKC3- http://spriters-resource.com/snes/dkc3/index.html

Kompleted Kongs;

Not ALL palettes are here, but most of them are. We might update these sheets with them soon, if we're not too burned out.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE feel free to tell us if we've missed anything. You guys are better experts at these than we are. One of the big things I'm trying to get right now is unused sprites. If anyone has access to unused stuff and would like to contribute them to the project we'll all be very appreciative!

In A.J. Nitro's/Ant19831983's DKC3 Kremlings sheet, I noticed that Kracka (a.k.a. the TNT Knocka) doesn't use the correct palette for its arms and legs in its running sprites, or its body in the picked up and thrown sprites. Here's the corrected version from my sheet, ready to be added into the aforementioned sheet.

kracka_fix.png
kracka_fix.png (34.91 KiB) Viewed 82115 times

Also in the same sheet, this frame, used when Knocka goes back into his barrel after stomping him, is missing.
knocka_stomped_frame.png
knocka_stomped_frame.png (1.29 KiB) Viewed 82115 times

It's actually just the first sprite in the animation of Knocka uses when coming out of the barrel, but with the legs visible. The reason the legs don't appear at first is because there seems to be a one-frame lag between when the body sprite updates and the arms/legs sprite does. This is also the reason why the sprites with a very noticeable gap between the legs and barrel exist--they aren't intentional.

EDIT: Oh yeah, almost forgot. Here's a sheet of the base sprites for all of the Brothers Bear. Although this isn't unused, it is interesting. I believe I applied Boomer's palette to them.

Missing in the Dixie sheet is her "steel keg" animation frames. This can be accessed by riding on a Steel Keg or by tossing Kiddy Kong to a wall and then riding off of him after a rebound.

Kiddy Kong also has these frames, except it can only be done by riding on a Steel Keg.

We've got the steel keg sprites on a more updated sheet. Thanks though!

And Mattrizzle, I think AJ has the bears without all the additional stuff on the sheet with the bear that uses those poses... if that makes sense. They all look like a brown Blue Bear with a layer of clothes/whatever on top to differentiate them.

Whoops, I missed that.

And this should help with the alternate sprite palettes that are missing. This doesn't have the palettes of every character, but at least all of them that appear in actual levels. There are also several unused palette variants in DKC2, all of which are leftovers from DKC1.

And a few other things:
  • The Green DKC3 Squawks in your sheet is using the Krematoa palette variant. The normal palette is the same as DKC2's. The egg is also using the Krematoa palette.
  • The Squawks death pose in the DKC3 part of the sheet is also used in DKC2 when you grab onto the Blue Squawks.
  • Additionally, the Squawks death sprite in the second game is an unused sprite in the third game.

In DKC3 (U), the following PAR code forces levels to use normal sprite colors:

You know, I was looking at the Squawks sheet today and could tell by looking at it that it was using the Krematoa palette. Thanks for the tips. ;)
Sounds like we have a lot of fun palette work ahead!

Updated the first post with Donkey Kong and Dixie. Enjoy!

As far as we can tell, this is all of their stuff (minus palettes). A big thanks to Mattrizzle for all the unused stuff.

There are still a few frames missing with Dixie as she has looking up while on the exit flagpole sprites that seem to be missing on the sheet, but otherwise the sheet is fairly compelete.

All the Kongs are up. Palettes aren't 100%, but this should be preeeetty much everything, unless some frames were missed somewhere. It's happened before. Hope you guys get some use out of them!

Hey Tonberry, I have a question for you. I'm working on putting all of my edited sprites into sprite sheets. I'm stuck on DK playing the bass. Should I put the bass sprites with the sprites of DK, or should I have them separate?

Tonberry, I've done what you've suggested and put both on one sheet. I'm having a bit of trouble, though. I've recently joined TSR, but I can't exactly figure out how to submit my sheets. They've been uploaded to photobucket already, so that's all good. I'm just a bit confused. Do I just post a new thread on
this page?

Yes, just like you use the threads named after consoles to post unedited sprites ripped from games.

I just realized that you are missing the mine carts that go downhill.

I also just noticed something... In DKC 1 and 2, there are 8 frames for them going up and 8 going down (mine carts/skull carts), but in 3, there are only 6 up and 6 down... I wonder why...?

They moved it to spriting and pixel art. I'm not planning on posting anything there anymore, anyway. I'm just going to stick to this forum from now on. All of my sprite sheets that I have so far are on photobucket. I've posted a link somewhere on here... I can't remember where (maybe custom/edited sprites). I have updated my sheets recently, so the ones on TSR are a little old.

It's after Donkey collides with an enemy. He falls down, shakes his head, then gets up. I remember seeing that in the DKCRE.

It's fairly similar to the demo in the Donkey Kong Country: Exposed promo vid.

I'm wondering if you missed sprites, or if they don't exist... but what about the Kongs turning on Squawks? Do those sprites not exist? I know that Squawks has turning sprites, so it would make sense that the Kongs should too... if they don't exist, I think I might edit some to make turning less flashy and more believable looking.

That is really weird. I wonder why they didn't make turning frames for the Kongs, but they did for Squawks... I wonder if there are unused sprites somewhere...?

By the way, have you been working on Winky swimming, or did you give up? :P

Those are actually used in-game. If you hit Lurchins in their jelly bodies when they're all the way open (you can do this with Engaurde) you can actually defeat them and that's their defeated frame. This attribute is shared with the pink Lurchins you meet in the Barbos battle.

No, their defeated frame is the same as their "closed" frame.

That's odd. I wonder what would be the point of those sprites then. Maybe they were supposed to be sucked away into the background like Bounty Basses and Booty (lol) Birds when they get "popped".
