DKC Wallpaper

Postby Stone » March 15th, 2008, 2:23 am

Here's a wallpaper I've made with the help of Qyzbud's Jungle Hijinxs map.

At the moment I've just made a 1680x1050 version, but if you like, I'll make one fitting your desktop-size ;)

Looks good and high-quality, but you should use .PNG for better compression ;)

That's right. But somehow the background was harmed when i was changing to 256 colors (maybe those additional colors Dixie uses?). Without this 256 colors reduction, the file was almost as big as the jpeg...

Beast?

I have a habit of alternating between those four tiled treats as desktop backgrounds.

Ahhh, I've made a brambles wallpaper with some similar 256x256 pieces. It's really nice that these fit together on each side

Kong-Fu... None of those are useful for tiling as wallpapers, as they only loop seemlessly along the x-axis. (except for the jungle one, which is seemy all over...)

They might work nicely for something like the header graphic here (clouds at the top of each forum page), but certainly not for a more average aspect ratio like a user's desktop. Obviously, if you're a pixel fan, you can enlarge them to fill the screen... but that's not really the point. You can do that with any graphic.

Sometime down the track, I'd like to work with some of you other graphics gurus to make a bunch of 'official' DKC Atlas wallpapers. We could make dozens... I'd like to have one for every single archetype in the trilogy, and many others of differing themes. We could even construct our own level layouts and place a host of baddies and items in them. I'd love to just start working on this now (sounds like a lot of fun), but I've got a lot going on already. :|

Oh, Stone: I think the reason limited palette compression would be giving troubles is due to the dark gradient background I gave the map. There are probably way more than 256 unique colours, as the gradient is a smooth, non-restricted gradient.

Of course not, the water levels are impossible to tile (Unless you're planning to do something like this )

I didn't notice they were so small for a desktop.

I love brambles:

Sky is 2x, one layer 1x brambels in the back and one layer is 2x.
Not that good, but you can see icons much better than on the brighter version

Oh yes, that could be a reason. so i have to look for an normal background. But the darkness is good, you can perfectly see desktop icons.

I love brambles, even if I've seen them for about 10 hours working on a Screech's Sprint map.

That's why I have made this Wallpaper. It has really tight brambles, maybe that will help finding your desktop symbols. If not, just lay them down on these big leafes. Enjoy! ;)

I never thought making wallpapers would be that much fun, even though the above is simply a prototype!

Since I now have the ability to fully map any level in the DKC trilogy, I will willingly create customs for those who are interested. Simply tell me the size of your desktop + the level type you'd want (and anything additional) and I'll do my best to construct a memorable desktop background for you.

(P.S. - It would most definitely help if you uploaded a picture of your current desktop, so I can make your icons fit attractively).

Just in case the wallpapers are taken offline (Imageshack has deleted images over the years, like Cody's one above), I've re-uploaded the wallpapers in a ZIP file:

Please forgive me, Qyzbud. I'm just trying to help users out here.
