Nintendo asked Sony to do it, then after it was almost done gave them the big eff you in the middle of the CES (which was the E3 of the day) and announced that Phillips would instead be filling that role. That too fell through and eventually only led to the CD-i, and Sony decided since they had worked so hard they were gonna get back at Nintendo and enter the market as their own console, and hence the playstation was born.
In fact, the original Playstation controller didn't even have analog sticks. Compare that to theSNES.
Finally, get this: Sony added the analog sticks later because the N64 came out and introduced the sticks. Sony decided to copy them again and redesigned their controller with analog sticks, using two to keep it symmetrical. Then a couple years later they redesigned it once again to implement rumble functionality after the N64 came out with the rumble pack expansion.
