DKC TAS

Postby Tompa » May 20th, 2009, 10:44 pm

2 years and 52 minutes ago, Arne the great and I began to improve the current 101% run TAS at TASvideos.org. The project has taken very long because of several redos and such. The run should have been done a long time ago really...

I decided to just put up a teaser for you, the first world. I have reached the middle of the fourthworld currently, but I don't want to show too many spoilers.

World 2

Arne is sadly not with me on this project anymore, but I wouldn't have been able to do this without his assistance in previous version. Thanks for being awesome!

To watch the SMV-file, you'll need to download SNES9X v1.43 found HERE and a Donkey Kong Country 1.0 (U).smc rom.
Enjoy, or something.

WHAT?!?! Poor DK.

That's pretty darn impressive, Tompa... even by your standards. You've optimised the crap out of it, and thrown in some sweet tricks... There's a bunch of stuff in there I want to ask you about, but I don't want to spoil any surprises for others, so I'll do that another time. For now I'll just say that your cartwheeling and bonus-area-entering skills have risen to a ridiculous level...

Awesome stuff, I want more. 8-)

PS. What's Arne up to, that he's no longer to collaborating? Hopefully he's just busy TAS'ing DKC2 or something. ;)

People who doesn't want to be spoiled should know better than to scroll down the topic anyway ;).
Or else you could just send me a PM and I can answer your questions.

Edit: "even by your standards." how much do you know about my standards anyway? =P.
Arne has lost interest in TASing and he has, at least he says, a lot of other stuff to do during the days.

Comicalflop, guy from TASvideos, has started an improvement to Arne's DKC2 any% run, but the run is on hold.

The speed run was quite impressive but why did you use slow motion to do it? Isn't that umm... cheating?

It's a TAS - Tool Assisted Speedrun (as in emulator tools): http://tasvideos.org/WhyAndHow.html#ToolAssistance

Tompa - I've seen enough of your skills on show in the past to know what you're capable of. ;)

Then what do you wonder about the WIP? :)

I haven't really explained anything in it, so it's understandable that you have questions.

I decided to upload world two of my TAS as well.

SMV

This is my way of saying that I won't be working on the run anymore. The reason to this is that I need a camera cheat/hack to be able to rpoceed. The ingame camera is too slow for me, so I can't see what I'm doing and unless someone can help me fix a different cam, I won't work on the run anymore. So I'm dropping the project until that.

There are lots of new tricks and glitches in the run so I hope it will be enjoyable for at least some of you =).

Massive warp glitch? You skipped like, half the entire game. How did you manage to find that one? :P

I uploaded third and fourth worlds as well to my Youtube channel long ago.
I'm not working on the run however, for several reasons. One is that I "need" to redo the run because I can optimize it a lot further.
And I want to include the glitched version of Croctopus Chase and that one is awfully hard to do... So this project is on hold awhile, don't expect anything new on it=P.

Whoa, wtf? That's a very obscure warp glitch. Must involve modifying latent memory addresses.

I'll have it be known that DELTA will not support this type of TAS, since warp glitches will be impossible.

That's a very impressive run! If only that sort of thing were possible without the aid of machines...

Katzii: It is possible to do that warp glitch on console as well. It's just very hard.
Once you are in the bonus, you have one frame to exit it with both characters, if you go too early the game will crash (It MAY, I have no idea though, damage your cart) and too late you'll warp to the wrong level. But yeah, you CAN do it =).

Also, Simion, I'll try to prove you wrong that warp glitches will be possible on DELTA! :D

I don't think I'd dare to try it. Glitches seem to follow me around as is (the wrong type of glitches!). I'll just stick to watching it in your TAS. :-)

Good luck, since I expect the object-oriented design to prevent such glitches from occurring. If they do (and you find one), then congrats because it would have to be a very serious/obscure programming error! (Any object-to-object scripts/events will not count, since a user-defined script or event could cause the warp location to be determined based on any number of in game variables, or even pseudo-random number generation!)

They have to be the same person! Also, this TAS speedrun still holds the 101% record for TAS. :parry:
